Andy Curlowe : Mycorrhizal

Galerie D’Este is pleased to present Mycorrhizal, its second solo exhibition for Andy Curlowe. Wishing to develop an artistic approach more reflective of his personal world, Andy Curlowe proposes a new corpus of works combining the exploration of nature, place and architecture with elements related to his intimate experiences. This series reflects, among other things, its many residences and its close connection with the American territory, particularly the State of Ohio, Vermont and New York. Curlowe, referring both to the present and the past, revisits the question of geographical distance through an aesthetic marked by a fusion of curved lines and natural forms that resist the geometry of the canvas. Presenting his works on canvas and linen as well as on paper for the first time, Curlowe creates a universe where each image has a narrative, a history, a past and future aspiration.

Mycorrhizal is a 3-part series that explores the working relationship of the artist to the landscape of his childhood home in upstate NY, the calculations and consideration of his life in Ohio and the ideas of applied renewable resources and sustainable building methods learned in his time in the woods of Vermont. These works are assemblages of these spaces and their personal connotations. Wishing to create a network of relations between different universes, Curlowe took inspiration from botanical pathology to account for the connections existing between the different organic elements, hence the title of the exhibition Mycorrhizal which refers to the symbiotic relationship between fungi and the root of the plant.
An installation of the artist taking the form of an architectural structure will also be exhibited, opening a discussion around the ephemeral and the permanent.

Born in 1984 in Schenectady, New York, Curlowe studied at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Following his bachelor’s degree in visual arts in 2006, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In 2013, Curlowe was a recipient of the CPAC Creative Workforce Fellowship. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States. In 2014 and 2015, Curlowe participated in the international art and contemporary art fair, Art Toronto, in the solo section, marking his passage in Canada.
