Digressions – Thierry Arcand-Bossé

As part of Manif d’art 9, Galerie 3 has invited Audrey Careau to curate the gallery’s first solo exhibition of work by Thierry Arcand-Bossé. Together with the artist, she has selected a series of new paintings in which Arcand-Bossé uses technology to address our relationship with nature.

Using webcam views from around the world and computer screensavers, Arcand-Bossé draws from a landscape pictorial tradition and abstract painting, while maintaining firm aesthetic and conceptual ties to the 21st century. The digital origin of the images that he constructs confer a certain veracity to his works, which he playfully thwarts through various deceits, reminding us that painting is foremost a construction. With a striking banality, the artist’s natural and colourful landscapes have the effect of throwing into question the relevance and value of the image in an era where digital technologies are democratized.

Thierry Arcand-Bossé’s pictorial practice is based on appropriation. Drawing from cinema, the Internet and personal photographs, his dense and well-researched images depict ambiguous places and figures that aptly embody the fantasies of perversion and alienation of our time, and prompt the viewer to reflect on our relationship with the image.

Thierry Arcand-Bossé obtained a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Université Laval in 2003. Arcand-Bossé’s work has been exhibited in galleries and artist-run centres around Quebec and he has participated in a number of events including ORANGE: Contemporary Art Event of Saint-Hyacinthe (2009), Quebec City’s Manif d’art (2008), the International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul (2007) and the Liverpool Biennial in the United Kingdom (2008). His works are held in a number of private and public collections including the Prêt d’œuvres d’art collection at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Global Affairs Canada, collection Loto-Québec and collection Desjardins. He lives and works in Quebec City.
