Excavating

OPENING RECEPTION: August 24, 2017, 7PM – 9PM

CURATOR’S TALK: August 26, 2017, 2PM – 3PM

Katherine Simunkovic is a student studying at Grant MacEwan University. She is majoring in History and Anthropology and is on a path that will lead into curatorial work following a Masters in History. Katherine has had the opportunity to participate in an archaeological dig this summer offered through MacEwan University, alongside her professor Dr. Biittner and fellow students, she will be excavating an area in the Millcreek Ravine in Edmonton, AB. Excited about the opportunity to learn about the old meat packing plant that used to operate in the Millcreek Ravine, Katherine is thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about a piece of Edmonton’s history at a very interactive and personal level. Katherine’s passion for history and art, and her involvement with this excavation is the impetus for her first curated exhibition at The Front Gallery. Featuring gallery represented artists as well as several Canadian and International artists, Katherine hopes to share her experience of the raw and organic nature of archaeological work with this exhibition.

“Excavating” is a look at the beauty that can be found above our heads to beneath our feet. Through a progression of aerial views toward a more intimate view of what we see in our everyday life, this theme is expressed through paintings, photographs and drawings. With a multitude of techniques, artists and approaches there is a sense of structure and organization that I found within the aerial works that carried through in the photographs of the buildings. As one moves through the space the paintings become less structured and develops a more organic and earthy theme, bringing the viewer back to a more relatable and personal experience of their surroundings.
