Joseph Plaskett: A Centenary, and Stephen May: Still There

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Joseph Plaskett’s life, Gallery 78 presents A Centenary an exhibition of oils and pastels from the artist’s estate from July 12 to August 5. Joseph Plaskett’s chosen subjects were intimate expressions of everyday life – interiors of his Paris apartment, still life, portraits of friends, landscapes of his Suffolk garden and pastel sketches of his travels. There is a warm humanity to his work, a love of light and form and colour that is evident in every painting he produced. Joe (1918-2014) made remarkable contributions to Canadian culture during his life, both with his art and with the Joseph Plaskett Foundation which bestows one of Canada’s most significant art awards to Canadian graduate student painters.

Most of my struggles as an artist are involved in the complex and mysterious nature of goodness”. Still There is a selection of Stephen May’s self portraits spanning over 40 years, which show the changes in the artist’s physical appearance, a sort of time lapse of a man from 20 years to 60 years old and also in his painting style. In Stephen’s words,
I can attribute the changes to having been inspired by particular artists and particular art movements over the years. That inspiration is my reason for painting. A vein of goodness flows through our history.”

Upstairs in the gallery, new work by Cliff Turner, Yvon Gallant, Monika Wright, Amber Leger and others are on display.
