Peter Harris: Undisclosed Locations

Galerie D’Este is pleased to present the works of Peter Harris for a third solo show entitled Undisclosed Locations. This exhibition examines interior spaces: lobbies, vestibules, waiting rooms, passageways, and stairways. Areas that are intended for temporary occupancy, measured in minutes or seconds, as we pass through to a destination. The focus is on these anonymous environments as they are simultaneously familiar, yet untraceable to any one part of the world. Each painting shares the aesthetic sensibility of countless public venues: functionally designed and stripped of any geographic or historical motifs.

These Undisclosed Locations are a vacant gallery where Peter Harris can act as curator, placing well-known artworks on the walls and creating interactions between the content of the artworks and the architecture. The historical paintings on display are often landscapes, still-lifes, or abstracts. Paintings by Hopper, Mondrian, Morandi, Rothko et al are featured, each having in common an artists’ ability to communicate an entire worldview in one image. The artists’ work offers a contrasting representation of depicted space and introduces a layer of historical or geographic information to the architects’ design. The artists’ singular image is deployed to modify the setting. The connection between the content of the curated artwork and the contemporary architecture is left as an open-ended proposition for the viewer to consider.
Peter Harris was born in London, Ontario in 1974, and currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. He completed a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo in 1997. Since then he has exhibited his paintings in group and solo exhibitions in Canada and the United States. He has won several awards for his continuing series of urban inspired landscape paintings, including an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant and a Waterloo Region Arts Fund project grant. His work can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.
