Mountain peaks and explosive colours in Irish’s painted aluminum constructions reveal tensions between the natural abundance of the Albertan landscape and the pursuit of fossil fuels. Irish’s frenetic and contemplative sculptural compositions are inspired by his residency at the Banff Centre, where the artist encountered the Rocky Mountains and the Athabasca Oil Sands. Irish attacks, twists and slices his aluminum paintings to explore the fraught dynamics between industry and nature.
