ELISSA CRISTALL GALLERY is delighted to present “The Figure in the Landscape” featuring guest artist Liz Toohey-Wiese and gallery artists Sara Caracristi, Taralee Guild, Jessica Korderas, Jessie McNeil.
“The Figure in the Landscape” takes a look at the narrative in landscape painting and the contemporary relationships between identity and space. The narrative has long been an integral part of landscape painting whether portrayed in direct representation, in historical references or in memory of real and imaginary places. We seem to have a keen desire to connect with nature and the landscape and to connect with other than oneself. The works in the exhibition comprise painting, collage and cast resin sculptures. Jessica Korderas’ sculptures are intricate dioramas depicting social situations in cabins and cottages – an icon of the Canadian landscape. In Caracristi’s small acrylic and resin paintings, the figures exist in a non-landscape giving us no clue to where they may be – leaving it entirely to the viewers’ imagination.
