Mr. Uno Langman
Uno Langmann was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1935. He received an early introduction to art and antiques through his parents. His mother was a painter and his father was an avid collector of antiques and passed this passion to his son. Mr. Langmann showed this interest at the age of eight when he began collecting coins.
In 1955 at the age of twenty he converted a portion of his coin and antique collection into a one-way ticket to Canada. After arriving in Vancouver he began a series of labour and construction jobs, but continued to study and collect fine art and antiques in his spare time.
In 1967 Mr. Langmann opened his first gallery, The Cedar Cottage. Shortly after in 1969 he entered into a partnership with Dr. L. Patrick and opened Tappit Hen. This antiques gallery was such a success they opened another, Tappit Too. In 1971 Mr. Langmann purchased the Century House building at 432 Richards Street, into which he moved his gallery. This building was later declared one of Vancouver's first Heritage buildings. In 1977 Uno Langmann Limited Fine Arts moved to its present location at 2117 Granville Street.
By the late seventies Mr. Langmann had established Sotheby's Parke Bernet in Vancouver and had become their first Northwest Representative. He helped organize three auctions all of which were very successful before withdrawing in order to focus exclusively on his own business.
Always an active member of the antiques and fine arts community Mr. Langmann did a series of guest appearances on the Bob Switzer Show on CBC in the mid 1970's. A strong member of the professional antiques and fine arts community, he has been a past president of both the Greater Vancouver Antique Dealers Association and The Canadian Antique Dealers Association. He is also a charter member of the Association of Personal Property Appraisers and a member of the Art Dealers Association of Canada. The British Columbia Entrepreneurial Award honoured Mr. Langmann in 1994 for Highest Retail Honours and Excellence in Business Management.
Since its inception in 2004 Mr. Langmann has been an active participant and expert on The Canadian Antiques Roadshow. He has been fortunate to discover some of the greatest finds on the Roadshow including a Henry Nelson O'Neil painting entitled "Eastward Ho! August 1857".
Uno Langmann continues to run his gallery located on South Granville's Gallery Row with the assistance of his daughter Jeanette Langmann. He continues to consult and appraise works for museums, government organizations, and the public.
