Employment in the Arts

ADAC Visual Arts Internship
For the past four years, under the guidance of Service Canada, the Art Dealers Association of Canada has been able to run a very successful Visual Art Internship Program based around exceptional youth participants and our member galleries as hosts. This internship hires primarily youth participants who have demonstrated achievement at a post-secondary level, and who will benefit from work experience with an employer in their chosen field. The participants are employed nationwide with gallery members of the Art Dealers Association of Canada, assisting these individuals in acquiring advanced employment skills to successfully launch their careers in the visual arts sector of the Canadian economy.

In order to be eligible as an intern candidate, an individual must:

be no more (inclusive) than 30 years of age at the time of selection
be a post-secondary graduate with a degree in the visual arts (fine arts degrees, art history, arts management, design etc.)
 be out of school
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
not be in receipt of employment insurance benefits

A Visual Arts background is essential as this is a career-related program. Participants must not have prior labour market attachment (no prior experience in a commercial art gallery).

For more information about ADAC Visual Art Internship Program, please contact ADAC at info@ad-ac.ca.

Over the duration of their 8 month internship, the participants develop skills integral to their future art careers. These activities may include:
 Introduction to gallery life
Orientation of the intern to the gallery environment and regulations (including occupational health and safety information)
 Basic training of policies
Instructions on gallery procedures, such as handling of art work, lights, installation equipment, storage facilities, client relations and general gallery administration procedures
Introduction into inventory system and storage
Basic training of receiving and shipping of artwork
Art systems training (adding inventory, processing invoices/payments and artist payments)
Helping with planning of exhibition schedule for upcoming year
Contributing to the preparations for exhibitions (writing of press releases, layout/ordering of invites)
Installation and lighting of an entire exhibition
Contributing to gallery openings (greeting guests, providing artwork information, sales, etc.)
Familiarization with shipping and receiving internationally (i.e.: commercial invoices, brokerage, harmony codes.)
Continuation with any short-term projects initiated by intern - as a growth development exercise
 Website management (updating images/information)
Databases management (running reports on Art systems)
 Client relations management
Introduction to the role and practice of Art Fairs
Assembling packages on artists for curators, etc.

The Intern's experience goes beyond the gallery itself, however. In addition to monthly teleconference meetings, interns have the opportunity to meet with other interns in their regional area for networking sessions approximately every 6 weeks. These meetings may include site visits and/or guest lectures by prominent members of the visual arts sector. The interns can share individual experiences and learn from one another, thereby increasing the development of all involved. Our youth will share problems or concerns that they may be confronting, and peer participants can offer solutions based on their own experiences. In the past, these meetings have provided successful networking opportunities.
