Galerie D’Este is pleased to present Cosmologie des chambres from Quebec based artist Annie Baillargeon. In this exhibition, the artist creates tension when she deliberately infuses two different types of spaces to challenge our way of living in them. Not only does her practice integrate performance, photography and painting, it also combines confined spaces with unlimited ones. The enclosed space of the room, which is a space of recollection, sleep, and intimacy, merges with a much larger world, public and shared one that is bigger than us, but also shelters us. Her images depict in one place an encounter with these two spaces and it is in that sense that there is an opening. One is looking for another. In hindsight, the experimentation present in each piece weaves a reflection on our ways to live together, the order of things and the contemporary disorders.
As a performance artist, Annie Baillargeon creates metaphorical works that center on the body as a central motif. The artist’s practice crosses genres and mediums in a multidisciplinary meditation on human interactions, both sociological and intimate. In these images, the multiple static and moving figures suggest sumptuous Baroque ornamentation and playful variations on a theme, all the while revealing fantastical universes where burlesque, vulgarity, tragedy and farce collide.
