Catherine Bolduc : La vie parallèle

La vie parallèle

April 11 – May 10, 2019

Opening: Thursday April 11 from 5pm to 8pm

Montreal, March 26th, 2019– Galerie D’Este is pleased to present La vie parallèle, a solo exhibition of recent works by Catherine Bolduc.

In this new series of works on paper, I appropriate photographs and illustrations from commercial image archives normally used by graphic designers and advertising agencies. My marks in pencil, watercolour and fluorescent acrylic paint on the inkjet-printed surface seem to flow and pool, evoking waterfalls, tornadoes, and volcanic eruptions as they fill the depicted spaces. These slick, sugar-coated representations of everyday life become contaminated by my hand, revealing a parallel inner life of a more emotional order (or disorder?).

In gleaning these stock images online, I am drawn to representations of generic and idealized locations. Bedrooms, living rooms, entry halls and restaurants, for example, in a variety of styles from modern minimalism to baroque excess to lounging orientalism. I also select those populated by figures in poses suggesting fatigue, boredom or daydreaming. In La vie parallèle, I continue my exploration of this singular trance-like emotional state of being “a million miles away”. In daydreaming, consciousness is not completely detached from reality, but is removed enough to invite the intrusion of fiction into otherwise plausible perception. The flow of fantasy illustrated in this series of works is pictorial, overlaying ethereal landscapes onto familiar locations, and celebrating the possibility of a parallel reading of the world, one which might map onto a fantastical psychic space, vast and open, where reality need no longer play by the usual rules.
