The State of Light
Opening reception: Saturday, September 7th, 2-6 pm
Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to present its second one man show by Pahrump, Nevada based painter, José Bellver. I met José in 1983 while attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He was an adjunct professor at the time, teaching painting and drawing. As a young man he had a profound impact. José, not only through his art, but his way of being, taught me what an artist is.
José Bellver was formally trained in Spain during the 1960’s, when he studied at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Escuela de Artes y Oficios Artisticos and received his graduation from the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernado in Madrid. He came to the United States in the late 1960’s and initially taught art for the San Francisco Unified School District from 1969 to 1970. In 1972, Bellver received a second MFA from California State University, Sacramento. He moved to Nevada in 1980, and quickly established a reputation as a painter in Las Vegas.
This exhibition titled “The State of Light” comes from a body of work executed between 2005 and 2008. They are colourfield painting analogous to the celebrated paintings created by Mark Rothko. As invoked by the title, these ethereal paintings illustrate the significance of light and how it shapes our perception of that which we behold. The works are arrestingly beautiful defying their two-dimensionality. They breathe as if animated, portraying the illusion of volume.
José Bellver who is now in his late seventies, created a new series of pastels this past year which complement the works created over a decade ago.
This exhibition will run until Wednesday, October 9th, 2019
