Jonathan Forrest: Colour Coherence

Jonathan Forrest, Purple Glow, 2018, Acrylic on canvas, 30″ x 40″

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 24th from 7-9 pm, Artist in attendance.

Exhibition Dates: May 24th – June 9th, 2018

Over the last 25 years, Jonathan Forrest has explored vibrant and engaging colour and form through paint. The bold and colourful geometric paintings in his latest exhibition Colour Coherence are created from thick, yet smoothly articulated planes of glossy acrylic against matte grounds. Graphic shapes in the works appear to shift as their surfaces reflect in changing light.

Born 1962 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jonathan Forrest immigrated to Canada in 1977. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan, receiving his BFA in 1983 and his MFA in 1991. Forrest’s work has been exhibited in commercial galleries across Canada, as well as in public art galleries such as the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, and the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina. His paintings are also featured in numerous collections across the country including Canada Council / Art Bank, Art Gallery of Alberta, Glenbow Museum, Moose Jaw Art Museum, Saskatchewan Arts Board, University of Lethbridge, and University of Saskatchewan. Forrest currently divides his time between Vancouver Island and rural Saskatchewan, where his “rustic” studio, an old church built in the late 1940s, offers the ideal space for Forrest’s ongoing exploration of the complexities of colour and paint application.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Thurs. May 24th from 7–9 pm, attended by the artist and featuring live jazz by Jerrold Dubyk.
