The Front Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of encaustic paintings, an ancient medium that lends itself to the visionary qualities that artist Tony Scherman brings to his work.
Tony Scherman was born in 1950 and received an M. Art postgraduate degree from the Royal College of Art in London in 1974. Since then he has lived and worked in Toronto. His paintings have been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in North America and Europe.
Sherman’s virtuosic use of encaustic sets him apart because these monumental images call into question their own subject, while also upholding the concept of history expressed by Heidegger when he wrote that history is not a succession of eras, but a unique demonstration of sameness. In the words of Jacques Henric, ‘Tony Scherman works at the extreme edge of the now, pushing, with every stroke of his brush, in every one of his canvases, at the narrow door of the truth, a truth that encompasses the very essence of time–mingling past, present and future, of history and of the human condition.’
