Opening Reception : Saturday, March 9, 1-4 PM with a presentation on the artist’s life and work by Lindsey Sharman, curator of the Art Gallery of Alberta at 2PM.

Joane Cardinal-Schubert was an artist, curator, and activist whose body of work addressed Indigenous experiences, the deep struggle for cultural autonomy and her personal history as an Indigenous woman in modern day Canada. Cardinal-Schubert drew upon autobiographical references, the history of Western Colonialism and art history in a career that spanned over four decades. She received many accolades, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2005, and in 2018, the opening of Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.

The exhibition will showcase paintings and prints from Joane Cardinal-Schubert’s Estate along with two of her best known large-scale installation pieces, “The Lesson” and “Preservation of Species:The Drying Rack.” “The Lesson” was first installed at Montreal’s Articule Gallery in 1990 and toured the country over the next three decades, showing in numerous notable exhibitions and venues, including Toronto’s Skydome and Masters Gallery’s 2009 retrospective. This is the first time both majorinstallation works will be displayed together in a commercial gallery.

Exhibition is on view from March 9 - 23, 2024.
