Closing Day | Kelly Grace 'Crossfade' @ Abbozzo Gallery

Exhibition Statement
Cinema is a series of transitions - scenes dissolving into one another, moments blurring together in time. Crossfade explores this transition between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the cinematic. Through a series of paintings depicting streetscapes, narratives and crowds immersed in 3D movie experiences, this exhibition captures the tension between observation and illusion. The figures, clad in vintage 3D glasses, are frozen in moments of collective wonder, their expressions reflecting the immersive power of film. Meanwhile, the streetscapes, often overlooked in their everyday rhythm, become theatrical in their framing—suggesting that the cinematic is not confined to the screen but can be found all around us.

Alongside these paintings, Crossfade presents a rare look into the artistic process itself. Colour studies, preparatory drawings, and colour grading experiments are displayed as integral components of the final works rather than hidden steps along the way. Much like in filmmaking—where editing, lighting, and grading shape the emotional tone of a scene—these studies reveal how colour choices and composition influence perception. By bringing these elements into focus, the exhibition invites viewers to see painting as a layered process, where meaning is constructed through a series of deliberate visual decisions.

This exhibition is in conjunction with the Canadian Art Hop!
