Branko Marjanovic was born in 1960 in the former Republic of Yugoslavia and has been devoted to art since his early teens, when he began teaching himself to paint mountain landscapes. Trained professionally as an engineer and geologist, he immigrated to Canada in 1993, settling first in Saskatoon before moving to Calgary in 1999—fulfilling a long-held dream of living near the Rocky Mountains. The Rockies quickly became his defining subject and enduring source of inspiration, shaping a practice now spanning more than four decades.
Working primarily in acrylic, after earlier explorations in oil and watercolour, Marjanovic is known for his bold colour, dramatic contrasts, and dynamic brushwork. His compositions balance structural discipline with expressive freedom, often placing brightest light against deepest shadow to create a sense of radiance and movement. Rather than replicate photographs, he seeks to capture the mood and emotional essence of the landscape.
“Painting is not work to me- it is something I become absorbed in. I am fascinated by the effect of the light and shade found in nature. Although I take photographs and sketches of the subject matter I paint, I do not allow them to control me. Thank you for the appreciation of my artwork. I am living the dream.”
